Hey, Dalton! Can you tell us a little bit about why you wanted to join the Down Home team?

I’ve been organizing in rural areas for around a decade now, since I was 15 years old. Coming to Down Home and being able to channel that experience and energy into an organization aligned with my values has been amazing! Plus, I get to stay in my home of Boone while doing the work, a big bonus!

What experiences are you are bringing with you into your role that you hope will help guide your work here?

I’m currently serving on Boone’s Town Council as the Mayor Pro-Tempore, it’s a huge honor and connects to our work in a big way. We talk about getting working folks in office, so being one of those people gives me an insight into strategy and campaigns. Before that, I founded and led a tenants rights organization, helped with high country reentry efforts, worked to protect voting rights with the Watauga County Voting Rights taskforce, and did a whole lot of canvassing across Ashe and Watauga.

What are you most excited about doing in this movement?

Working to get members and working people involved in organizing and politics. I believe that our state is better when we encourage those folks to get involved and make their voices heard. I’ve seen that impact in all of our counties and I can’t wait to be a part of growing that across NC.

Okay. This last question is important: What is the best biscuit you’ve ever had?
The best biscuit I’ve ever had has to be “Everybody’s Loaded Biscuits” in downtown Boone. It’s a little food truck that was parked next to my old apartment, so proximity gave me tons of experience with their biscuit expertise. It’s the real deal and will stack up to any biscuit you could think of, plus, they were so successful they opened a brick and mortar location too, so I don’t think I’m alone in this opinion.

Dalton also serves as Mayor Pro-Tempore on Boone's Town Council. He is proof that folks from working-class backgrounds can achieve great things and build power in their community. We are proud to have him on our team!
