Home for the Holidays: Announcing the Cabarrus County Bail Fund

Innocent until proven guilty.

Here at Down Home Cabarrus, members believe strongly that this accepted and often repeated phrase should guide our actions. Especially now. And we have also come to realize that many Cabarrus County citizens are currently incarcerated in our local jail on low bond amounts that they are not able to pay.

The holidays are just around the corner. While many of us hunker down at home with our loved ones and prepare for festivities (granted, perhaps very differently than in years past), some of our fellow citizens are facing an unprecedented global pandemic alone, and in jail.

Down Home Cabarrus members are passionate about demonstrating one of our core values: simply being poor shouldn’t determine how you are treated in the justice system. Unfortunately, the stark reality of incarceration during the Covid-19 pandemic is that you could lose your life to this disease while in jail, unable to make even a one-thousand dollar bond, because of a non-violent and low-level accusation. Innocence should be presumed until proven otherwise and that process will now be delayed even further due to the court system’s 30 day shut down, another result of this global pandemic.

Should anyone have to fear for their life in this way?

We say they should not. And we invite you to partner with us as we seek to make real change and impact lives this holiday season through our Down Home for the Holidays Bail Fund effort.

Our goal is to bail out at least five citizens on December 21st who would otherwise spend the holidays in jail, away from family, with the increasing threat of Covid-19 simply due to a lack of financial means.

You can help to save someone’s life and counteract the injustice of cash bail by donating NOW!

Your gift in any amount will help bring a mom, a dad, a friend, or a neighbor Home for the Holidays right here in Cabarrus County.
