Western Regional Organizing Manager

Location flexible: Western North Carolina

Down Home North Carolina (DHNC) is seeking a full-time Western Regional Organizing Manager to build, support, and train a regional network of member-led Down Home chapters across all 16 mountain counties, including our existing chapter in Madison County. The Western Regional Organizing Manager will support this network to build power through community outreach, relationship building, and leadership development.

The person in this position will work to develop and implement an organizing strategy that builds and develops new Down Home chapters and campaigns through a mixture of in-person and remote support. The Western Regional Organizing Manager will supervise and manage one or more organizers as part of this strategy.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated to build and develop new leaders, and to win power for poor and working people. They are a seasoned organizer organizer, and are experts in the craft of organizing, base-building, and recruitment. They are familiar with and able to train others on core organizing and issue campaigning skills and principles. They are goal-oriented with a high degree of personal organization, and enjoy making and executing detailed plans. Previous experience managing organizing teams, projects, or departments is required. They are an effective communicator and eagerly collaborate with others. Experience running canvasses, electoral field operations, and issue campaigns is desirable. Candidates with experience organizing in Appalachian, rural, and/or southern contexts are preferred.

Down Home NC is founded on the belief that small towns and rural areas cannot be ignored if we want to see progressive change at the state and national level. Through our network of member-led, county-based chapters, we are engaged in year-round organizing, leadership development, multi-racial movement building, and civic engagement.  We are unique in our focus on building permanent progressive infrastructure in North Carolina’s rural places.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Develop and execute a regional organizing strategy to build new member-led Down Home chapters in Western NC. This will require relational and recruitment work to identify and train local members to carry out broad community outreach, recruitment, relationship building, and 1:1s.
  • Develop a plan to support and train member-leaders across the region as they establish issue-based working groups, build their chapters, and launch local issue campaigns. This will require a mixture of in-person support and remote support for local leaders.
  • Support local leaders to launch and win county-specific campaigns to transform power and win real victories for our members. 
  • Support, manage, and train full-time organizer(s) to continue ongoing chapter work in Haywood and Jackson counties (and elsewhere).
  • Launch and lead canvassing operations as part of broad community listening programs.
  • Track and maintain real-time records of membership and organizing efforts.
  • Support the Western chapter network to participate powerfully in Down Home NC’s collective statewide campaigns, including expanding Medicaid, communications campaigns, and voter contact work.
  • Contribute to a dynamic and growing staff culture at Down Home NC. 

Qualifications 

We are seeking experienced candidates with exceptional organizing chops who are passionate about building a base and building power for working people. They should excel at relationship building, volunteer leadership development, and time management. We are looking for candidates who are excited to take on a big vision, are results-oriented, and thrive in fast-paced, demanding work environments. You should have: 

  • 5 or more years of experience as a professional field organizer, or equivalent grassroots experience 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and support powerful volunteer teams and leaders
  • A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of stakeholders 
  • Demonstrated ability to run issue campaigns in an organizing context
  • Excellent time and project-management skills, including the ability to plan your time and work toward long-term goals
  • Experience working across multiple projects and priorities
  • Four or more years experience managing organizers 
  • Proficiency with NGP VAN tools
  • Comfort with dynamic and fast-paced work environments
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including strong interpersonal skills 
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse races, socio-economic statuses, housing statuses, variations in hygiene, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations, and people who engage in substance use 
  • A demonstrated passion and commitment to racial and economic justice

This is a critical position within Down Home’s staff team, with the possibility of promotion. Compensation for this full-time, permanent staff position includes best-in-class health and retirement benefits. We also offer unusual benefits, including a sabbatical policy. Some irregular hours are required, including occasional nights and weekends. Location is flexible within Western North Carolina or surrounding region.
